What to Expect

New to online speech therapy? Here's everything you need to know to prepare for your first session and beyond.

Before Your Session

Simple steps to set up for success

1

Test Your Technology

Make sure your device, camera, microphone, and internet connection are working. We'll send you a link to test everything beforehand.

2

Find a Quiet Space

Choose a quiet, well-lit area with minimal distractions. A table or desk where your child can sit comfortably works best.

3

Gather Simple Materials

Have paper, crayons, and a few favorite toys nearby. Your therapist may use these during the session.

4

Plan for Parent Involvement

Especially for younger children, plan to be present during the session. Your involvement helps your child feel comfortable and allows you to learn strategies.

During Your Session

A typical session breakdown

1

Warm-Up & Connection

~5 minutes

Sessions start with a friendly warm-up to help your child feel comfortable. The therapist will engage in conversation or a fun activity.

2

Targeted Activities

~15-40 minutes

The main portion involves interactive games and activities targeting your child's specific goals. Everything is designed to be fun and engaging.

3

Parent Coaching

~5 minutes

The therapist shares strategies and tips you can use at home. This is a great time to ask questions about progress and practice.

The First Session

Your first session is special

The first session is all about getting to know your child and understanding their needs. Here's what we'll focus on:

  • Getting to know your child's personality and interests
  • Assessing current speech and language skills
  • Explaining observations and initial recommendations
  • Discussing goals and what therapy will look like
  • Answering all your questions
  • Making sure your child feels comfortable

Common Questions

Questions parents often ask

That's completely normal! Our therapists are experts at engaging children. Sessions include movement, games, and activities that don't require sitting still the whole time. Many parents are surprised at how well their children do.
For younger children (under 5), we recommend you stay nearby. As children get older and more comfortable, some prefer to have sessions independently while you're in another room. We'll work together to find what's best.
Technical issues happen occasionally. If we can't resolve them quickly, we'll reschedule at no charge. We also have tips and a tech check process to minimize issues.
Every child is different. Some see changes within a few weeks, while others take longer. We'll set realistic expectations based on your child's needs and provide regular progress updates.
